As its name suggests and as the colors imply, the MCL35M is intended to continue the legacy of the 2020 MCL35. And why would it be different for a race car that finished third in the constructors’ championship in 2020?
Besides the application of the 2021 technical regulations which bring some aesthetic changes, it is the engine block, hidden under the hood, that has occupied the McLaren engineers.
The Woking team thus benefits from the Mercedes power unit, which is narrower than the Renault. The MCL35M is therefore slightly slimmer at the pontoons, primarily closer to the ground. However, it gains a ventilation on the sides of the cockpit to channel airflow under the hood.

The front wing
No major changes in the aerodynamic elements at the front. We simply note a new attachment point for the nose to its wing. A philosophy that is similar to the 2020 Mercedes, Racing Point, and Renault design.
Pontoons and air flow deflection fins
The winglets were revised by the 2021 regulations. They are shorter than before, and there is a notable decrease in the number of elements compared to 2020.
Flat base
This is the most visible part on the MCL35M: the loss of a few centimeters of its flat floor, just before the rear wheels. As mandated by regulations, this change limits the engineering work around airflow and implies a loss of downforce of 5-10% according to estimates.
Engine hood
The arrival of the Mercedes power unit allows McLaren to rethink its design and offers a general refinement of the engine cover. Narrower but with more numerous air intakes. Also notable is a mini wing extending from the engine cover. It’s still unclear exactly what this might entail.
Rear wing
The design of the rear wing is identical. You can simply note two small additional fins that were not on the 2020 version.
Diffuser
What about the diffuser? Regulations provide for changes in this area, but McLaren is being secretive by covering its diffuser in photos to keep it hidden from competitors. We will learn more in the coming weeks.
