According to Toto Wolff, Ferrari could abandon the 2021 season
Following the freeze on developments that will be applied from next season, Ferrari will not have the opportunity to improve its car and might have to write off the 2021 season.
The 2020 season is not easy for the Italian team, which finds itself in the middle of the pack while Mercedes continues to sweep the competition. The SF1000 underperforms and, although many options are being explored, it seems difficult for Ferrari to return to being competitive, even with a new engine.
Earlier last week, Mattia Binotto mentioned the ongoing power unit developments with some encouraging initial feedback.
Toto Wolff thinks that the Italians will place more importance on the 2022 season, which will see the introduction of new regulations.
« I don’t think the ranking between the teams will change next season. There will be teams, like Ferrari, that will completely write off 2021. These teams will develop their cars for 2022 from the start of the season. » comments Toto Wolff.
The development will indeed be allowed starting on January 1, 2021, when the FIA sends the final technical regulations to all the teams.
Mercedes could very well follow suit, although for the German team, the situation is different.
« Of course, it is quite difficult for us to find a good balance between 2021 and 2022. Red Bull and Honda are not far behind us and they will want to finish their collaboration on a high note. We will have to fight against this but without wasting too much energy. We will have to do what is sufficient, but in Formula 1, it is very difficult to know what your rivals have in store. » adds Toto Wolff.
