Then 6th in the Styrian Grand Prix, Daniel Ricciardo faced a passing attempt by Lance Stroll at turn 3 on the 71st lap of the 71 to be completed. This very ambitious attempt by the Racing Point driver, braking from a long distance, forced Daniel Ricciardo off the track, causing him to lose a place to Norris, who was 8th until then, and to Stroll. 2 places lost in one turn that the Renault driver did not recover.
Although no penalty was imposed on Lance Stroll for this overtaking attempt, Daniel Ricciardo wants to review and clarify the rules for this kind of overly ambitious overtaking attempt in the upcoming races.
The subject will therefore be put on the table during the drivers’ debriefing this Friday at the Hungarian Grand Prix. The Australian driver wants to understand what can be attempted and clarify what should be penalized. He believes that from the moment the driver making the overtaking move has to go off track because they carry too much speed, the overtake is then failed, and they should either be penalized or give back their position. Stroll’s overtake would not have posed any problem for him if he had been able to brake within the track limits.
« I never wanted to have overly complicated rules because it prevents us from running and putting on a show. But I also don’t want us to constantly look in the rear-view mirrors or be afraid to take a turn. There are attempts and sometimes they turn into failures. » explains the Australian.
« To avoid the accident, we both had to go off the track. If I had taken my turn correctly, we would have collided. We didn’t crash because I went off the racing line, and I believe he should have given back the position. »
« I don’t expect Stroll to bring up the subject on Friday during the debrief, so I will take the initiative because I don’t want it to stay like this. I sincerely think that none of the drivers can consider it a clean overtaking. »
