2008
800th Grand Prix, first Singapore Grand Prix, and the first night race in history witnessed one of the biggest scandals in F1 history, (the) crashgate. Nelson Piquet Jr spun out and hit the wall on the orders of Flavio Briatore, managing director of the Renault team. This accident triggered the deployment of the safety car and aided the victory of his teammate Fernando Alonso, who started from the fifteenth position on the grid. Months after the revelation of this scandal, Nelson Piquet Jr was dismissed by Renault while Flavio Briatore also left the team and Formula 1.

The Marina Bay circuit has more turns than any other circuit on the calendar. It features 23 turns, including 14 to the left and 9 to the right. The fact that most of them are quite tight contributes to Singapore having one of the longest average lap times of the season.
2017
Turning point of the season in Singapore, Lewis Hamilton takes advantage of Sebastian Vettel’s premature retirement to soar to the top of the standings. The German driver falls victim to a very eventful start in the rain, which is also fatal to his teammate Kimi Räikkönen and Max Verstappen in his Red Bull.

Following his teammate Nico Rosberg’s retirement due to an electronic problem, Lewis Hamilton wins the race and takes the lead in the championship with a 3-point gap. This gap continues to grow, and the British driver wins his second world championship title.

Nico Rosberg secures pole position ahead of Daniel Ricciardo and wins the race. He thus regains the lead in the championship from Hamilton and holds it until the end of the season, allowing him to win his sole world championship title, 34 years after his father.
