Away from the Mercedes and Ferrari in qualifying, Max Verstappen was able to finish close to Kimi Räikkönen in 5th position. Daniel Ricciardo's dark weekend continued with a breakdown on the grid lap, before retiring on lap 28.

Lewis Hamilton was imperious in qualifying, but lost out on victory in the race when he was overtaken during his pit stop. Sebastian Vettel won the first race of the season. The two Mercedes cars completed the podium.

In his first F1 qualifying session, Antonio Giovinazzi passed his baptism of fire with a respectable 16th place on the grid, alongside team-mate Marcus Ericsson.

Fernando Alonso had no problems during qualifying, but his car didn't allow him to do better than 13th. On the other hand, Stoffel Vandoorne once again experienced engine problems and had to make do with 18th place on the grid.

Nico Hülkenberg came very close to reaching Q3 in his first race with Renault, but had to settle for 12th place. Jolyon Palmer, meanwhile, suffered and finished last in the session.

Lance Stroll's learning curve remains complicated: after making contact with the wall in FP3, he was forced to change his gearbox and was only able to make one attempt in qualifying. He will therefore start last. Felipe Massa limited the damage, finishing 7th on the grid.

The Albert Park circuit is definitely a favourite spot for Romain Grosjean: the Frenchman finished a fine 6th, the best grid position in the American team's history. Kevin Magnussen, on the other hand, could do no better than 17th due to driving errors.

Daniel Ricciardo didn't have the qualifying experience he'd dreamed of in front of his home crowd: he crashed out at the start of Q3 and had to make do with 10th place on the grid. Max Verstappen finished fifth, a long way behind Mercedes and Ferrari.
