Three Caterham drivers raced today. Charles Pic completed both practice sessions, while Alexander Rossi and Diego Van der Garde shared the second car. Alexander Rossi, the only American on the F1 grid in 2013, became the first American driver to compete in the US Grand Prix since Speed in 2007. The Mercedes drivers delivered strong performances today, competing with the Red Bulls in the afternoon. Lewis Hamilton has a new chassis and hopes that this will allow him to match his teammate's pace. The Englishman is pleased with his car, but he is especially happy with the track and the atmosphere. Nico Rosberg is also performing well. He posted the 3rd fastest time this afternoon, just behind the Red Bulls, and hopes to secure another podium finish this season.

Ferrari was able to prepare properly today, without any hitches. Fernando Alonso set the fastest time during Free Practice 1, which was disrupted by fog and a red flag, but the Spaniard could only manage the 10th fastest time in the afternoon. The same for Massa; performances dropped with rising temperatures. The weather variations don't seem to be the cause of this significant difference in performance between FP1 and FP2. Massa indeed points to the lack of new developments on the Ferrari for a few races now.

Adrian Sutil and Paul di Resta, the two main drivers of the Force India team, were driving in Austin today. Sutil achieved his best performance by setting the 11th fastest time but believes he can do better on a track he is discovering. Di Resta, for his part, is focusing all his attention on tire management with a view to likely making only one pit stop during the race. The Scot is confident after seeing his teammate's performance and believes they have interesting opportunities before the qualifications.

Marussia ran three drivers today in Austin during this first day. Jules Bianchi and Rodolfo Gonzalez shared one car, while Max Chilton had the opportunity to drive during both free practice sessions. The schedule was busy, especially to understand problems encountered with the car over several races.

Daniil Kvyat completed his first laps with the Toro Rosso team in Austin during Free Practice 1 today. The Russian set the 17th fastest time in a session disrupted by fog and the circuit's helicopter issues but is pleased to further his experience in Formula 1. Jean-Eric Vergne, who gave up his seat during FP1 after losing the draw, did not extract the full potential of his car but remains confident for the qualifying. His teammate, Daniel Ricciardo, also believes there is a lot of work to do tonight to find the right settings for tomorrow.

Fernando Alonso was under investigation following the 2013 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The Spanish driver engaged in a fierce battle with Frenchman Jean-Eric Vergne as he exited the pits, overtaking him outside the track limits. Ultimately, the race stewards did not impose any penalties on them.
