Sebastian Vettel secured the pole position for the European Grand Prix held in Valencia. The German driver leads Lewis Hamilton, Pastor Maldonado, Romain Grosjean, and Kimi Räikkönen. A strong performance by Heikki Kovalainen who qualifies for Q2, and disappointment for Mark Webber who only manages 19th place due to problems with his Red Bull, as well as for the Ferrari drivers who were eliminated in Q2.

The HRT team did not have an easy first day, Pedro de la Rosa experienced some brake issues, although they were quickly resolved. The Spanish driver then went off track, which prematurely ended his session, but he remains optimistic for tomorrow. Since the private tests at Mugello, Ferrari's Fridays have been very studious, with the flow of new parts remaining continuous. Today was no exception, as the Scuderia undertook valuable work evaluating these new components. Work they hope will pay off tomorrow but especially on Sunday.

To its great chagrin, Toro Rosso continues its momentum from Canada by not being able to participate in the fierce battle for honorable positions. The STR7 is simply not fast enough, although it is hoped that a few changes will suffice to aim for better on Saturday.

The Lotus likes the heat and today it wasn't particularly warm in Valencia. Nevertheless, the outcome of these tests is good and with temperatures expected to rise a bit tomorrow and Sunday, the team anticipates a strong performance.
