The two Red Bull team drivers could only manage a third row start in Melbourne. But Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel are convinced they can gain a few positions tomorrow, and perhaps finish on the podium for this first race of the season. Neither of the two men had a perfect qualifying lap, with Vettel making a mistake on his lap and Webber lacking KERS, which fuels their hopes for a better day tomorrow in the race.

Highly anticipated today, the McLarens did not disappoint as they claimed the front row, three-tenths ahead of Grosjean and his Lotus, and seven-tenths ahead of the Red Bulls. Lewis Hamilton secured the pole position on his first attempt in Q3, with Button missing by just a few thousandths.

Tipped as a team to watch this season, Lotus makes a statement by securing the third-fastest time in this first qualification of the season, thanks to Romain Grosjean who ranks behind the two McLarens. Kimi Räikkönen, on the other hand, was victim to a small communication error that prevented him from passing Q1.

Pastor Maldonado managed to place his Williams FW34 in Q3 during the qualifying session in Melbourne. The Venezuelan driver will start from 8th place on the grid tomorrow and hopes to score his first points of the season. His teammate, Bruno Senna, did not have the same success, and the Brazilian just wants to give his best and hopes to climb up the hierarchy during the race.

Felipe Massa hoped to fight for a podium this weekend in Australia, but after the qualifying session, it is clear that the Brazilian and Scuderia Ferrari will have to lower their expectations. Neither Fernando Alonso nor Felipe Massa managed to get past Q2, and both men acknowledge that the F2012 is not as good or as fast as its rivals. The Italian team will therefore have to work to improve, and earning a few points tomorrow during the race seems to be the only achievable goal for the men from Maranello.

Like last season, and despite a few laps during the various free practice sessions, both HRTs, driven by Pedro de la Rosa and Narain Karthikeyan, did not pass the 107% threshold and will therefore not participate in the race tomorrow. There is still a lot of work to be done by Friday and the first tests in Kuala Lumpur.

After a challenging 2011 season in the midfield, Mercedes seems to approach the season in much better shape: Michael Schumacher lines up on the second row, ahead of the Red Bulls, while Nico Rosberg, who made a mistake, will start behind the Red Bulls.

The Sauber drivers failed to qualify for Q3 in Melbourne. Kobayashi clocked the 13th fastest time, but the Japanese driver hoped to do better, believing that the C31 had more to offer than this position. For Sergio Perez, things did not go as planned; he faced a gearbox problem and was thus unable to defend his chances in Q2, so he will start 17th. Both men intend to do everything to climb up the field tomorrow during the race.

Even though Heikki Kovalainen and Vitaly Petrov were unable to outperform other cars besides the Marussias and the HRTs, the entire Caterham team is convinced they have made progress and narrowed the gap with teams that have been in F1 longer. The positions of the two drivers do not reflect this progress, but that is because the team was unable to prepare for qualifying as they wished.

In a highly anticipated qualifying session, it was the McLarens that made a big impact by monopolizing the front row. Behind Hamilton and Button, Romain Grosjean impressed by taking third place, right under the nose of Michael Schumacher. Both Red Bulls will be on the third row.
