At the Hungarian Grand Prix, Mercedes took the risky gamble of bringing in Lewis Hamilton 4 laps before the end of the race to put on new soft tires and set the fastest lap, earning an extra point in the championship for the English driver and his team in the process. A decision that goes against the initial plan of the Mercedes team and did not sit well with Toto Wolff.

Between lack of pace and collisions, the Scuderia could hope to recover at the Hungarian Grand Prix with its short, slow-corner circuit. On a dry track, Lewis Hamilton was once again magnificent. The Briton secured the 90th pole of his career, ahead of his teammate Valtteri Bottas. 3rd and 4th with Lance Stroll and Sergio Pérez, Racing Point made progress in understanding their car, allowing the Mercedes engine to dominate the top four spots on the grid!
