Manufacturers complain about the FIA’s points system

Excluded from the new points system allowing for the awarding of the super license, an essential entry ticket to Formula 1, DTM has expressed its dissatisfaction to the FIA. Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz, the three manufacturers involved in the competition, have sent a letter to the International Federation, requesting a review.

Manufacturers complain about the FIA’s points system

Last January, the FIA caused a stir by tightening the conditions for obtaining a super license, which is essential for participating in a Formula 1 Grand Prix. The decision was made to favor drivers originating from the feeder series of the top tier of motorsport, such as the upcoming Formula 2 or GP2.

This new system, however, does not please everyone… Renault has already expressed its dissatisfaction since the Formula Renault 3.5 Champion will not be able to directly move up to the next level (having only 30 points out of the required 40). Now it’s Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz’s turn, the three manufacturers involved in DTM, to speak out.

According to Autosport, the German trio reportedly wrote a letter to the FIA, asking them to reconsider their position. The DTM is not included in the new points system established by the International Automobile Federation. For instance, Christjian Albers or more recently Paul Di Resta would never have been able to race in F1 if this rule had been applied in the past. The same goes for Susie Wolff, who will participate in two free practice sessions during the 2015 season.

The first driver who might bear the brunt of these drastic measures is none other than Pascal Wehrlein, Mercedes test driver in Formula 1, currently stationed at HWA in DTM. Promised a bright future, the protégé of the star-branded company will have to change his program if he wants to achieve his dream… unless the FIA sides with Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz, who, without a doubt, are involved in enough programs to wield a minimum amount of influence.
