After mixed winter testing, Toro Rosso didn't expect to fight for a spot in Q3. While capable, the team didn't take advantage of the opportunity by choosing the wrong tires. In the race, Jean-Eric Vergne got the upper hand on his teammate at the start. The French driver recorded the second fastest lap of the Grand Prix behind Räikkönen and was able to fight for points. Therefore, the Toro Rosso is fast, and they will need to better exploit its performance next week for the Malaysian Grand Prix.

Disappointed after the announcement of Adrian Sutil's appointment at Force India, Jules Bianchi was able to secure a starting position for the 2013 Formula 1 season with the modest Marussia team. Dispatched on site by Ferrari to observe the tests, the French driver only learned at the end of the day that he would be driving for Marussia, without even knowing that an opportunity existed.
