The Turkish Grand Prix kicks off the European season in Formula 1. How would you summarize the first part of the season?
We made great progress this year in the design of the car, with innovations, and it appears very strong. We had good races and secured two podiums. We also experienced a bit of bad luck, but that didn’t affect us. I believe things are looking good for us actually. I’m happy with my performances and our results so far. But we need to stay focused and continue working at the same pace.
What memories do you have of Istanbul Park?
I have very fond memories here. I love running here. I had a lot of success in GP2 (won here in 2009). My first appearance in F1 on this circuit also stays in my memory. It was the first time I reached Q3 and during the race, I had a good battle with the Ferraris. Unfortunately, a puncture prevented me from scoring points, but it was a great race.
What are the characteristics of the Istanbul Park Circuit?
I like the layout of the circuit. It features slow turns and fast curves, it’s a clever mix and also a rather technical circuit. We all know the famous Turn 8 in Istanbul. Another aspect, the track is really wide which makes it safer. It also offers overtaking opportunities and that should help make the race enjoyable.
You are 7th in the drivers’ championship. What is your ambition for this Turkish GP?
Obviously, I will give everything I can to achieve the best possible result. We should have some updates on the car in Turkey, which is good. But the other teams will react and give their all to beat us. On our side, we will redouble our efforts to catch up with the leaders. You never know what can happen during a race weekend, but one thing is for sure, the team and I will push hard!
