Friday: Ferrari can believe in their chances in Turkey

Ferrari brought new aerodynamic elements this weekend for the return of Formula 1 in Europe. The Italian team seems to have made a step forward but still has a lot of work to do to optimize the time spent in the wind tunnel and in development. The other teams, moreover, are not forgetting to make progress.

Friday: Ferrari can believe in their chances in Turkey

Fernando Alonso – 1st and 11th

The two sessions were very different from each other for me mainly because of the weather. In my opinion, it was useful to have driven a bit in the rain this morning because tomorrow the weather might be somewhat similar. We tried several new solutions and compared them carefully. I also had a hydraulic issue that made us lose some time in the pits at the beginning of the second session. I also have some problems understanding how the tires work and I spun out.

The track seems to be really hard on the tires. It’s going to be interesting to follow that for the race. I think we have made good progress even though several teams have as well. We will do our best.

Felipe Massa – 7th and 6th:

According to what I have observed, we have made a step forward in terms of performance, but we are still far from the best. However, it’s still difficult to assert this at this stage. We will have to wait for the qualifications. We are making huge efforts to come back, and I think we are on the right track. Unfortunately, the other teams are not standing still either… For example, Mercedes, which seems to have made a big step forward.

Pat Fry – Chief Engineer:

It’s always difficult to establish a hierarchy after the first day of testing, and it becomes even more complicated when one of the sessions takes place in the rain. This morning’s session allowed us to learn more about our new components, even though our laps were limited due to the rain. The forecasts are still uncertain, so we need to optimize all our options and race strategies.

Our developments are progressing well, and the rear wing, tested on Felipe Massa’s car, seems immediately effective, unlike the new floor and front wing which may need a bit more evaluation.
