Sunday: Even at home, Rosberg finishes ahead of Schumacher
The two Mercedes GP drivers were starting today for a home race in front of their fans. Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher both had a good start to their weekend by making it into Q3. However, Rosberg dominated the seven-time world champion in qualifying and the race, but both drivers finished wheel-to-wheel.
Nico Rosberg – 7th:
I had a good start today and gained a position at the end of the first lap. I was in 5th place. However, I didn’t have the optimal setup for the race and didn’t perform as well as in qualifying. I had a really nice battle with Massa, but despite my efforts, it was impossible to keep him behind me. The 7th place is not a bad result, but we know we need to work better to maximize our performance. I have a great team behind me and amazing engineers and mechanics. I’m confident, and we’ll see what happens in Hungary in a week’s time.
Michael Schumacher – 8th:
The race was very exciting today with a lot of action both on the track for the drivers and on the screens for the spectators. Fortunately, everyone in the stands today was fired up, which helped warm up the chilly temperatures a bit. My spin came as a complete surprise, but this place is known to be slippery in wet conditions. In short, I lost some positions in a silly way… Towards the end of the race, the rain could have helped us, but the chances were slim, so I didn’t count on it. That’s all there is to say. I’m satisfied with my position nonetheless and with the improvements on the track. We can now focus on the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Ross Brawn – Director:
The events were rather in our favor at the beginning of the race with Nico Rosberg’s strong stint to finish in the top 6. However, his pace deteriorated, especially in his third stint, which cost him a position. Schumacher had to brake on the white line or on a curb at turn 10, which caused a loss of grip. He then recovered well to finish just 10 seconds behind his teammate. We saw a great race today and were able to score good points, essential for our position in the championship standings.
