Vettel is ready to fight until the end of the season
While some observers are confidently predicting a second title in 2011 for Vettel, the young German has declared himself ready to fight to the end as long as the title isn't secured.
We remember that in 2010 the championship title was only awarded at the end of a thrilling season, during the very last Grand Prix of the season. It could be quite different in 2011 as Sebastian Vettel, crowned last year, seems to have a significant lead. Indeed, the young German arrives in Monza with 259 points, compared to 167 for Webber and 157 for Alonso, his two pursuers in the world championship!
However, Sebastian Vettel remains cautious and keeps his feet on the ground: “You never know what can happen. Obviously, I appreciate having such a lead, it’s reassuring, but we cannot let up,” adding: “We have to fight hard until the end.”
The modesty displayed by the young Red Bull driver and 2010 world champion does not prevent some commentators from showing great confidence regarding Vettel and the 2011 title. This is the case with David Coulthard, the former McLaren and Red Bull driver who works for the BBC. “His 92-point lead over his closest rival almost certainly guarantees him a second world title,” says the Scotsman.
On the constructors’ side, Sebastian Vettel’s team is also far ahead: Red Bull Racing is currently at the top of the provisional constructors’ championship standings with 426 points, followed by McLaren and Ferrari with 295 and 231 points, respectively.
