Martin Whitmarsh believes in his drivers’ chances
The McLaren team director remains optimistic about his drivers' chances in the world championship...
While the Red Bull Racing team, ultra-dominant this year, seems to have taken a serious lead in the drivers’ and constructors’ titles since the Belgian Grand Prix, Martin Whitmarsh, the Team Principal of the McLaren team, remains confident about the chances of success for his drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button.
Thus the director of the British team declared: “We (the McLaren team) exist to win. It’s in our DNA,” adding: “Sebastian (Vettel) had an extraordinary start to the season, however Red Bull has only won two of the last six races. It’s a sign that we have made progress, just like Ferrari.”
« In this kind of situation, you cannot give up. What I know is that there are seven races left, and we can win them all, » Martin Whitmarsh pointed out.
Whitmarsh also expressed doubts about Red Bull’s future success: « I have learned that it is extremely difficult to win consistently. Look at what Ferrari did with Michael Schumacher, and what happened afterward ». A way, no doubt, to motivate his team…
At this point in the 2011 season, the McLaren team is second in the provisional constructors’ championship standings behind Red Bull with 295 points. On the drivers’ side, Jenson Button (149 points) and Lewis Hamilton (146 points) are respectively fourth and fifth in the standings.
