Vettel enters the club of double world champions
By finishing third this Sunday at Suzuka during the Japanese Grand Prix, Sebastian Vettel completed the race he needed to achieve, for the second consecutive year, the world title in the premier category of motorsport. Thus, he joins the very exclusive club of double F1 world champions...
It’s done: Sebastian Vettel is a double Formula 1 world champion. After starting in 2007 with BMW-Sauber, his impressive rise in the category and his first title at the end of 2010, the young German driver climbs another rung in the ranks of the world’s best drivers.
His name is now listed in the discipline’s record alongside those of Alberto Ascari (champion in 1952 and 1953), Jim Clark (1963, 1965), Graham Hill (1962, 1968), Emerson Fittipaldi (1972, 1974), Mika Häkkinen (1998, 1999), and Fernando Alonso (2005, 2006). All these names resonate in a special way within the world of motorsport, and even beyond.
However, none of these legendary drivers achieved Vettel’s feat of being crowned twice at such a young age (two titles at just 24 years old for the native of Heppenheim)!
What does the German driver have in store for the future? Perhaps more victories in 2011 (there are still four races left this season)? And next year, how will his Red Bull-Renault perform? Will it allow him to go for another title, a third consecutive one? It would once again be a great first for a driver in the history of F1!
But it is of course too early to think about such a scenario, we are still in 2011, and let’s give Sebastian Vettel time to savor his second Formula 1 title.
