Sunday: Pérez tenth, retirement for Kobayashi
Qualified 17th and 18th on the starting grid, the Sauber drivers experienced mixed fortunes at the Indian Grand Prix: Sergio Pérez made it into the points with a tenth-place finish, while Kamui Kobayashi was forced to retire at the first corner... Reactions.
Sergio Pérez – 10th:
« I am very happy to have scored a point today. I owed it to the team after my mistake on Friday for which I was penalized three places on the grid. The strategy was very good today. It was risky, but it paid off and the team did a great job. I used hard tires for the first lap. After that, I stopped and got caught in traffic. Eventually, I waited for the safety car to come out because there was a lot of oil on the track. But after that, I overtook Paul Di Resta and was able to push hard. The first set of soft tires was good. The second was more difficult to bring up to temperature and Sutil was really fast, so I couldn’t catch up to him. In the end, I think we didn’t manage to exploit the car’s full potential in qualifying, and we still have progress to make. »
Kamui Kobayashi – Abandon:
« Unfortunately my race today was short and disappointing. After the start, I was hit in the rear and immediately saw smoke and fire coming from the car. Clearly the damage was significant, so I stopped the car and got out. »
Monisha Kaltenborn – General Manager:
« We are very happy with the point scored today, especially considering where we started on the grid. Sergio drove very well and showed a lot of fighting spirit. I’m disappointed for Kamui, whose race ended at the first corner. We proved today that we can fight, and that’s the mindset we will have for the next two races. Congratulations to the organizers and thanks to all the fans. »
