Sunday: Solid race for Team Lotus
Qualified 17th and 18th on the starting grid respectively, Heikki Kovalainen and Jarno Trulli finished in the same positions at the end of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Both Team Lotus cars completed the race without major issues. However, no points for the small Malaysian team, but encouraging progress for the future. Reactions.
Heikki Kovalainen – 17th:
« We had another good start which made the whole race quite simple. I didn’t have any issues during the race, the pit stops were good, and our strategy worked perfectly. We had a solid race weekend. In the first stints, we are now able to keep up with the pace of the cars ahead of us, which is clearly a sign of progress for the team. We still have one race left, we are focused on Brazil, and we will try to finish the season as strong as we have been since the Singapore Grand Prix. »
Jarno Trulli – 18th:
« I lost a few places at the start because of a clutch issue, but within a few laps I was able to catch up with our direct competitors, overtake them and manage my position for the rest of the race. The second stint was good, but during the last one I had difficulties getting the hard tires up to temperature, which prevented me from pushing as hard as I would have liked. The weekend was quite challenging, I came here with a bit of a fever but I have recovered well, and now I want to make sure to have the best possible race in Brazil to secure the team’s tenth place.
Mike Gascoyne – Technical Director:
« The race was solid and I’m pleased to see both cars finish the race without issues all afternoon. We chose the same strategy for both cars, which was to do the first two stints on soft tires and then finish on mediums. It worked well. Jarno lost a few places at the start but had a good middle of the race. Heikki was fighting with the Renaults at the end of the race but couldn’t pass them given the time he had left. Now our focus turns to Brazil with the goal of securing tenth place. This will provide a foundation for us to make further progress in the future. »
