Villeneuve: With Hamilton, Alonso or Vettel, Lotus would have already won
Jacques Villeneuve believes that the Lotus E20 is one of the best cars on the grid and that with a top-tier driver, the Enstone team could have won numerous races this year.
Some observers believe that the Lotus E20 is one of the best single-seaters on the grid this year, but the Enstone team has not yet managed to win, and this is attributed to the drivers according to Jacques Villeneuve.
The 1997 world champion, who is commenting on this Canadian weekend for Sky, believes that the E20 is an incredible single-seater and that if Team Lotus hasn’t won yet, it’s because Kimi Räikkönen and Romain Grosjean haven’t shown enough performance so far.
He even believes that with a top-tier driver, Lotus could have dominated the start of the season: “Put a Hamilton, Alonso, or Vettel in there and maybe they could have won every race.”
For the moment, the best result for the Lotus F1 team is the second place achieved by Kimi Räikkönen in Bahrain, and while the Finnish driver acknowledged in an interview with the official F1 site that the goal is to win a race, everything is not yet perfect: «In my opinion, we need to be stronger in qualifying. Obviously, our aim is to win, but sometimes it’s better to fight for a good position and score big points. If the victory comes, it comes.»
