Sunday: Marussia is getting closer and closer to Caterham
Marussia had a good qualifying session yesterday by beating both Caterhams. Unfortunately, the Russian team couldn't confirm this today in the race. Without KERS, neither Glock nor Pic could withstand the attacks from the Caterhams. Glock finished 19th, just ahead of his teammate Charles Pic. The French driver set the fastest lap for the team and among the backmarker teams in the championship in the penultimate lap; a way to end on a positive note.
Timo Glock – 19th:
« We had a solid race even though we expected more. The first lap was very difficult, I almost lost the car twice. Vitaly [Petrov] was able to overtake me and it was complicated to resist because of the advantage provided by his KERS. Then, Heikki [Kovalainen] passed and it was the same story even though I was able to stay close to him… We then decided to pit earlier than planned hoping to overtake him in the pits, but he pitted at the same time… A bit later, I managed to find an opening at turn 12 but he overtook me again at turn 15, slightly forcing me off track. Our pace was very solid, and that’s one of the positive things to take away from this weekend. We’ve made a good step forward and we still hold our 10th place in the constructors’ championship. We hope to attack again next week in Brazil. This weekend was great in Austin and the team’s efforts are starting to pay off! »
Charles Pic – 20th:
« It was difficult today, I must admit. I had contact at turn 1 and then suffered from understeer throughout the race. The front wing was damaged. I also struggled to keep the tires up to temperature during the second stint because of all the blue flags. It’s a shame, especially after the good progress we made this weekend and especially yesterday in qualifying. We expected better for the race. Towards the end, I was able to find some rhythm, enough at least to set the team’s best lap, so I finish on a positive note. Now, we are going to focus on the Brazilian Grand Prix but this stay in the USA has been very pleasant. Well done to the whole team. »
