FanVision will no longer be in F1 in 2013
It will no longer be possible to follow F1 live on FanVision in 2013 because the American company did not reach an agreement with Bernie Ecclestone on the financial terms of such a deal.
This is a tool greatly appreciated by fans during race weekends that will disappear in 2013: the FanVision service, which allows viewers to see images from multiple cameras on a personal screen from their seat in the stands, as the company has not been able to reach an agreement with Bernie Ecclestone.
Even if the announcement is not officially made on its website, FanVision announced that it was unable to renew its contract with the FOM: « As you know, for several months, we have been trying to find the basis for an agreement between FanVision and the FOM to continue providing our service in F1 in 2013. Unfortunately, it is now clear that we will not be able to reach an agreement with the FOM. Much to our regret, we must confirm that we will not be in F1 in 2013. It is a great loss for us. »
This news will upset more than a few as it was a service also used by many professionals who travel to the circuits. Thus, many people involved in the support teams of promotional formulas (GP2, GP3, Porsche Supercup) use the images broadcast by FanVision to better visualize the performance of their drivers on track since FanVision broadcasted all the track sessions.
Moreover, it was a service widely used by the teams, sponsors, and the Paddock Club to allow guests who might not be fully aware of all the intricacies of F1 to follow the race a little more easily. They might therefore lose interest in this very glamorous Sunday outing from their perspective as long as they understand at least the essentials.
The obvious alternative to such a loss is obviously to set up a mobile phone application capable of providing the same service. However, this poses many technical issues: how to have a network powerful enough across the entire circuit to allow tens of thousands of devices to receive live images without interruption, as well as the battery life of mobile phones under such intensive use… The agreement with Tata Communications could be a solution, but it seems unlikely that a solution will be found by the start of the season…
During the same period, FanVision will continue to supply NASCAR, the NFL, and even college football. Who said F1 was the pinnacle of technological advancement in motorsports worldwide?
