Sunday: Massa, the only Ferrari driver to cross the finish line
While Alonso and Massa managed to get into the top 3 during qualifying, a collision between Alonso and Vettel damaged the Spaniard's front wing, forcing him to retire after a run through the gravel. His teammate, Massa, was able to bring points to his team by finishing in 5th place.
Fernando Alonso – Retirement:
« Today, unfortunately, we were very unlucky. After having a good start, I hit Vettel at the second corner: it was a surprise to find him there, almost at a standstill, and I don’t know at what speed he was going. Despite the fact that the car was damaged, it didn’t seem too serious, and with the team, we decided to continue, because if we had stopped immediately and then again 3 or 4 laps later to put on dry tires, we would have definitely lost the chance to finish in the top positions. It’s easy to criticize this decision, but at that moment, it seemed like the right one. It was clearly a pity, because here we could have fought with the Red Bulls, but circumstances didn’t help, and apart from the wisdom of the decisions we made, bad luck really played its part. When you think of the number of off-track excursions there were in Australia without consequence and even here, when cars went off the track. Now, we are already focusing on the upcoming races in China and Bahrain, where we hope to do better than last year, to arrive in Europe with as many points as possible. »
Felipe Massa – 5th:
« Today’s race was very complicated with a start on intermediate tires for a track that was very wet in some places and dry in others, and I lost time to many drivers right from the first lap. Coming into the pits quickly to switch to slick tires was perhaps a bit risky since the track was still wet; it made me lose a bit of time, but on the dry, the car improved and tire degradation wasn’t excessive, so I had a good pace, but I knew at that moment I couldn’t finish on the podium. I can’t say I’m satisfied with this result, but given all the difficulties encountered at the start of the race, I’m happy to score points. »
