Sunday: Red Bull narrowly misses victory
At the end of the British Grand Prix, the performance is relative for Red Bull. Sebastian Vettel retires when he was 12 laps away from finishing on the top step of the podium. The German loses significant points in the championship against his rivals. However, on his side, Mark Webber, who was not in luck at the start of the race, perfectly executed his strategy to climb up to second place. The team thus leaves with good points and remains in the lead in the championship.
Mark Webber – 2nd:
What a day! No one could have predicted everything that was going to happen! The start was very bad for me, and we will need to understand why because in recent races it was quite the opposite. Then I had contact with Grosjean and the wing was damaged. The team did a good job during my pit stop to replace it. After that, we were able to start the real race. I was praying for the entry of a safety car but not for the reasons it came in because we thought we would be next [note: to have tire issues]. When something like this happens, it’s a bit like Russian roulette. It’s never comfortable to see other drivers retire for the same reason and to drive thinking that it might be your turn too. I tried to take advantage of the safety cars every time they came out, and today the strategy was one of the most effective we could set up. I think it worked superbly. I worked hard to manage my pace when I needed to, and then there was Nico [Rosberg] and I couldn’t pass him. It was almost a very, very special day [note: marked by a victory] but it still remains a beautiful day.
Sebastian Vettel – Retirement:
« In fact, I’m very disappointed to have had to retire when we were just a few laps from the end of the race. We had a problem with the gearbox. I think 5th gear got stuck, and it damaged the rest of the gearbox, so it was impossible to continue like that. It’s really a shame because we were in a good position, and it’s always a great Grand Prix to win here. So we will have to come back next year and try again. It’s good that there’s not much time before the next race. »
