Saturday: The Williams drivers went out too early
Pastor Maldonado and Valtteri Bottas were unable to take advantage of the track conditions this afternoon at Spa. The two men were sent out too early by the Williams team, but they still believe they have a chance to come back and score points in tomorrow's race.
Pastor Maldonado – 18th and 17th:
« Today, the changing weather conditions made it difficult to have the right tires at the right time and we went out on intermediates a bit too early. This track is very long and by the time I was on my second lap while the track was improving, my tires were already worn and I wasn’t competitive. The car’s race pace is good, so we’ll push to gain positions and I think we still have a chance to finish in the top 10. »
Valtteri Bottas – 14th and 20th:
« It was a disappointing qualifying session because we had the opportunity to be better positioned, but we were caught out by the changing conditions. We went out on intermediates earlier than others, but the track dried faster than expected and in the end, we could have probably gone out on dry tires. We also struggled to find grip with the intermediates and were sliding quite a lot in the corners, which cost us time. It’s a shame because there was a good opportunity to do well today, but hopefully, the weather will be the same tomorrow as it will offer us different strategy options. »
