Sunday: Ricciardo brings a point to Toro Rosso
After a completely failed qualifying session, the Toro Rosso team managed to recover today during the race at Spa-Francorchamps. Daniel Ricciardo secured the point for 10th place while Jean-Eric Vergne had to settle for 12th place.
Daniel Ricciardo – 10th:
« It was nice to score that point! We did a long first stint on the hards and I think it helped us set up a good foundation to have a good pace in the last stint on mediums. I felt even more comfortable with the mediums and that’s when my race really started. With the last set of tires, I had to do about 10 qualifying laps and managed to pass several cars to secure that crucial point. We knew we had to bounce back after yesterday. I said that starting from where we were, scoring points would be good, so I’m happy about that and the pace shown as we battled. »
Jean-Eric Vergne – 12th:
I think we could have done a little better than 12th place because my pace was good until the last stint when I had a slow puncture almost from the beginning, which meant performance dropped off. I managed to pass Hülkenberg with a great overtake, but I couldn’t catch up to Pérez ahead and then my teammate Daniel came behind with fresh tires. It was hard for me to be competitive in that last stint. It’s a bit of a weekend to forget because it could have ended much better if we hadn’t made a mistake in qualifying, but at least when things go right, it seems our car has regained the speed we lacked before the break.
