David Ward candidate for the presidency of the FIA
David Ward has resigned from his role as Director General of the FIA Foundation to announce his intention to run for the Presidency of the FIA. The Briton is the first candidate to declare for the succession of Jean Todt as head of the FIA.
Since 2009, Jean Todt has been the President of the FIA. The former director of the Scuderia Ferrari won against his only rival, the multiple world rally champion, Ari Vatanen. The election for the future President of the FIA will take place in December, and while no candidate had come forward until now, that is no longer the case.
Indeed, David Ward, who was appointed CEO of the FIA Foundation 12 years ago, announced his candidacy for this position. The Briton also announced that he was resigning from his role as CEO of the FIA Foundation to focus on his campaign.
« After careful consideration, I have decided to run for the FIA presidential election. The election period begins in September, and it will be necessary to approach FIA members to obtain the nomination. In these circumstances, I believe the appropriate measure is to resign. The election process inevitably involves robust and dynamic debates, and even though the Foundation is independent and there is no legal requirement for me to resign, I believe it is in the best interest of the Foundation for me to step down, » Ward stated in a statement published on the FIA Foundation’s website.
Candidates for Jean Todt’s position must submit their electoral lists between October 23 and November 13, and for now, David Ward is the only candidate to have announced his candidacy. Jean Todt could seek his own succession, but at present, the Frenchman has not yet made a decision about whether or not to continue leading the International Automobile Federation.
