The technical regulations will be completely overhauled next year with the requirement to have Turbo V6 engines. Team Sauber, already powered by Ferrari since 2009, will therefore have the Italian V6 engines for the 2014 season.
In its statement, the team mentioned a contract that includes the provision of engines as well as the gearbox and the ERS energy recovery system.
Monisha Kaltenborn, the team director, expressed her delight at this official announcement: “We are happy to extend our technical partnership with Ferrari, positioning Sauber in a new engine era starting in 2014. Ferrari is a long-standing partner. […] We are proud of the relationship we have with this prestigious and renowned brand. We are eager to start 2014 with such a powerful and strong partner as Ferrari.”
Ferrari was already equipping Peter Sauber’s single-seaters from 1997 to 2005, before BMW bought the team.
With this announcement, 10 teams have now officially confirmed their engine supplier for next season. Only the Lotus team has yet to officially announce its contract with Renault, which is expected to be extended barring any surprises.
As a reminder, Caterham officially announced a few days ago the extension of its contract with Renault. This weekend in South Korea, the sidepods of the Anglo-Malaysian single-seater also feature the logo of Samsung Motors, Renault’s subsidiary in Asia.
We had also learned with astonishment earlier in the season that Williams will be powered by Mercedes next year, leaving Renault the possibility of providing engines for an additional team, in this case Toro Rosso.
The list of engine manufacturers 2014:
