Brazil will be present until 2020
While there might no longer be any Brazilian drivers in F1 next year, the country has just secured its future on the calendar by signing a contract that extends until 2020.
There was no urgency in the negotiations between the two parties since Brazil’s current contract extended until 2014. Nonetheless, if the contract is extended today, it is because the circuit can now implement its work project that has been discussed for years.
In order to bring the circuit’s infrastructure up to the level of other circuits on the calendar, a brand new paddock will be built starting next year to be used from the 2015 edition. It will be located in the long straight following the famous Senna S’s. Interlagos is thus following what Silverstone implemented a few years ago: relying on a long-term contract with F1 to modernize its infrastructure.
It can therefore be seen that the Brazilian authorities continue to invest heavily in their sports infrastructure, even though many demonstrations took place in the streets of the country’s main cities during the last Confederations Cup to protest against the enormous expenditures made to host the World Cup and the Olympics.
Local leaders may have also urged the sport’s chief financial officer to use his influence to ensure a Brazilian driver is on the grid next year, which can only boost ticket sales. The local passion for the sport has not waned despite the four winless seasons of a national driver (the last being Rubens Barrichello in 2009). This could therefore benefit Felipe Massa or Felipe Nasr, who are in discussions with Lotus for one and Toro Rosso for the other regarding a possible seat next year.
