Todt the only candidate for his succession as head of the FIA after all
David Ward has withdrawn his candidacy for the position of FIA President - due to a lack of sufficient support - leaving Jean Todt as the sole candidate for a new term at the head of the F1's governing body.
At the end of the year, the FIA will elect its new President. For now, the race for this position is a duel between the outgoing President, Jean Todt, and David Ward – former General Director of the FIA Foundation – who recently announced his candidacy.
But ultimately, the British man stated a few days ago that he had not been able to gather the necessary support to successfully run his candidacy and that he was therefore withdrawing from the presidential race.
« It was not possible for me to secure the necessary number of [support from] regional vice-presidents of sport to ensure the eligibility of my list. Therefore, I would like to congratulate Jean Todt who will serve a second term […], » stated David Ward in a letter addressed to the FIA.
In order to be eligible, Ward needed to obtain the support of seven vice-presidents, which he failed to do. This leaves the field open to Jean Todt, who is now the sole candidate and is expected to be elected for a second four-year term as head of the International Automobile Federation without surprise.
