Sunday: both McLaren drivers score points
Jenson Button managed to make up for a poor qualifying by climbing to 10th, thanks to an overtaking move in the penultimate lap of the race. As for Sergio Pérez, he finished where he started: 7th.
Sergio Pérez – 7th
« To be honest, I was hoping to do better than 7th today. On the first lap, I managed to overtake Fernando [Alonso] and the car was performing well. After that, however, between laps 10 and 15, tire degradation started, and we struggled more than those around us. They seemed to handle their degradation better than we did.
But, more importantly, I want to say a big thank you to all my Mexican and American fans for the support they have given me throughout the weekend. They came to see me succeed, and even though I was hoping with all my heart to offer them a better result than 7th place, it was extraordinary to have their support during a weekend that was challenging and very special.
Jenson Button – 10th
Even if I was only fighting for a single point in the championship, I wanted to do my best this afternoon. As in all the recent races, I hit another car on the first lap, a contact that broke the left part of my front wing. It wasn’t as bad as in Abu Dhabi but it still caused understeer. We considered changing my front wing during the pit stop but, instead, the mechanics added some front wing, which helped to rebalance the car. It still wasn’t ideal because losing aerodynamic downforce not only affects the front wing but also the airflow across the entire car.
I still enjoyed my race. The first 30 laps, when I was stuck behind Felipe [Massa], were particularly challenging, but I managed to make some nice overtakes at the end, and that made our day a bit more interesting.
Now I hope to have an interesting and problem-free race that scores points for the last Grand Prix of the season in Brazil next weekend.
