Pérez convinced that F1 will go to Mexico in 2015
While Formula 1 will not be heading to Mexico next year, Sergio Pérez believes that a Mexican Grand Prix could indeed take place in 2015; this is his wish, anyway.
With the emergence of Mexican drivers in Formula 1, led by Sergio Pérez and Esteban Gutiérrez, Mexico seemed well on its way to regaining a spot on the Formula 1 World Championship calendar for the first time since 1992, when Nigel Mansell won driving his Williams-Renault on the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
The Central American country was included in the first draft of the 2014 calendar published by the FIA in September, however with an asterisk indicating it was pending confirmation. To take place on the same track as over 20 years ago, the circuit needed renovation work to meet the new F1 standards.
While Mexico seemed to be in a good position to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix again next year, the country ultimately does not appear on the recently published 2014 F1 season calendar by the FIA.
Sergio Pérez, one of the main stakeholders in the return of F1 to his country, however, expressed confidence, as quoted by *Autosport*, about the return of the Mexican Grand Prix in the coming years: « I expected it, so I’m not that disappointed. But I think in 2015, it can really happen. We are much closer than we were a few months ago. I have high hopes that 2015 can be [the year] when [the Grand Prix of] Mexico takes place. »
