Horner: “More than a question of time” before seeing a woman in F1 again

Christian Horner, the director of the Red Bull Racing team, believes it is only a matter of time before a woman participates again in a Formula 1 Grand Prix. Only five have managed, and the last to do so was Giovanna Amati, who tried three times to qualify for the race in 1992 without succeeding.

Susie Wolff took part in the young driver tests held at Silverstone last season, driving the Williams, becoming the first woman to participate in an official F1 session in over 20 years. But Horner believes that at the moment, there is not yet a woman talented enough to be present on the grid.

There has been a lot done about women drivers in Formula 1. The best thing from a marketing standpoint that we could do would be to have a female driver. This is not to say that there won’t be one, but for now, there is none who could find herself at the forefront, explained Horner, as quoted by The Daily Telegraph.

But the Briton believes that this could change as several young women might soon be knocking on the door of F1: « Susie is a very competent driver. It’s hard to judge if she can make it on merit for now. But there are some talented young female drivers coming up, and it’s only a matter of time. »

For the moment, however, there are still few female candidates, as we mentioned several months ago.
