End of the journey for the FOTA
The FOTA is no more; in fact, its secretary-general, Oliver Weingarten, confirmed yesterday that the association of F1 teams has been dissolved, as had been recently mentioned in the specialized press.
The English press had recently stirred the waters concerning the future of the Formula 1 Teams Association (FOTA), which seemed undecided for a few days, but now things are clear with yesterday’s announcement of the dissolution of this entity.
Indeed, Oliver Weingarten, its secretary-general, announced yesterday on FOTA’s Twitter feed that the adventure was ending six years after its creation in 2008: « I can confirm that FOTA has been dissolved today following its members’ reevaluation of their requirements in the face of a changing political and commercial environment in Formula 1. »
The FOTA was created in 2008 to unite the teams in negotiations with the governing bodies – the FIA led by Max Mosley at the time – and the holder of commercial agreements – the FOM led by Bernie Ecclestone. But for several months already, following the departures of Ferrari and Red Bull, notably at the end of 2011, the FOTA had lost its power.
