Sunday: Button inspired for McLaren, but rookie mistake for Magnussen
After a double podium in Melbourne, McLaren was losing momentum in Malaysia. Despite what he considers an almost perfect race for his team, Jenson Button could only finish 6th while Kevin Magnussen made a mistake that ruined his race from the second corner.
Jenson Button (No. 22) – 6th
The Englishman sweated a lot with two fierce competitors behind him. He is happy with this result, which he considers unexpected: « It was hot this afternoon! And when you have the two Williams fighting in your mirrors, it gets even hotter. Despite everything, it was an enjoyable race, and I couldn’t really hope for better. I think we got the most out of our package, I really didn’t expect to finish sixth considering the car’s behavior at the beginning of the weekend. »
Although this race was satisfying, he knows that his team is not out of the woods yet, and the car still needs improvement: « It’s encouraging for the guys to have executed the pit stops and fuel management flawlessly throughout the race. Nevertheless, we can’t deny that we are still fabulous on the fast corners; this car has its strengths, but we still have a lot of work to do. »
Kevin Magnussen (No. 20) – 9th
The Danish rookie paid for his inexperience at the beginning of the race. He apologizes for his mistake: « I am sorry for the team for ruining my race as early as the second corner during my incident with Kimi. I think we could have scored big points today, so I am very disappointed with what I did. Grand Prix are long races, so I shouldn’t have made such a mistake so early in the afternoon. But these things happen and you have to learn from them, and that’s what I’m going to do. »
However, he does not let himself be defeated and assures that he will bounce back quickly: « After this incident, it was difficult to recover, and we struggled with the high track temperature, as well as in the fast corners. As I said, I will learn from this race and see what I can do next time. It’s a good thing that the Bahrain Grand Prix is so close; it will be good for me to forget this one and move forward. »
