Hülkenberg: “Red Bull has the best chassis”
Who will come out on top between a very agile but less powerful Red Bull, a dominant Mercedes since the start of the season, or a Williams that could create a surprise? Some statements from the leading figures on the grid provide a better assessment of the strengths in play this weekend for the Bahrain Grand Prix.
According to Nico Hülkenberg, if we disregard the engine, the RB10 is the best car on the grid. He stated to Auto Motor und Sport that: “For me, Red Bull has the best chassis. No car corners as well and exits corners as well.” Even though he acknowledges that from this point of view, Mercedes and Ferrari are not far behind, which makes the brand with the star overall ahead in the complete package.
Since the beginning of the season, many voices have been raised against the Renault engine. However, if it turns out that the RB10 chassis is the best on the grid, as Sebastian Vettel readily admits at Red Bull: « If we do our job well and perfectly tune the car, it is possible that I will gain time over others in the corners. »
The French power unit would be the Achilles’ heel of the Austrian bull, according to Helmut Marko.
These findings make Mercedes the big favorite, once again, in Bahrain. Indeed, as Fernando Alonso remarks about the German team: “We know they have a power advantage… just look at the gap with their competitors to understand that they have a very good car.”
However, a team could play the spoiler. It’s the Williams team, which also benefits from the highly efficient Mercedes engine. Some believe that the Grove car might be the fastest on the long straights of Sakhir. Let’s recall that Felipe Massa had set the best overall time during winter testing in Bahrain.
Nico Hülkenberg also notes about the English team that they have excellent fuel consumption. Indeed, several sources claim that both FW36s started the Malaysian Grand Prix with only 90 kg of fuel in the tank, which notably explains the fuel consumption indications provided by the race broadcast showing a clear difference between the Williams drivers and the other teams.
The bets are on…
