Lauda: Nobody can beat Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton secured his fourth consecutive victory yesterday at the Spanish Grand Prix of Formula 1, driving a dominant Mercedes F1 W05 Hybrid. Niki Lauda believes the Briton is at the peak of his craft and that nothing can stop him.
The Mercedes drivers were dominant during the free practice sessions, the qualifying, and the Spanish Grand Prix held on Sunday, and thanks to Lewis Hamilton’s victory in Barcelona and Nico Rosberg’s second place, the star-branded team achieved its 4th consecutive one-two finish.
Niki Lauda, quoted by The Independent, expressed his delight with his drivers’ performances and the show put on yesterday at the Circuit de Catalunya: “If we are leading with a 50-second lead over the third [Daniel Ricciardo, editor’s note] and with our two drivers battling from the first to the last lap, we cannot do more for the sport and everyone else.”
The Austrian hopes that the German and the British will perform just as well in the upcoming Grand Prix races: « I hope [it continues] because my strategy is very simple. We do not interfere with who wins what. We let them fight from start to finish. That’s my philosophy. For the moment, nothing [bad] is happening. I hope it continues until a point in the championship where there is no third driver [for the title]. Then I will be fully relaxed. »
« Then, they can race against each other, and the one who survives will be the world champion. That’s my dream. But we’re not there yet. I want them to give it their all and not be enemies, and then it will really be war! »
Hamilton was able to fend off Nico Rosberg’s attacks at the end of the race, which highlighted the excellent current form of the Briton: « Lewis is unbeatable. It’s very simple to say. Because he improves with every race, he makes no mistakes of any kind. Nico tried everything to get him. He pushed hard to save his tires in the middle of the race to be ready to attack him at the end. He drove very well and he could have had him, but not when the race was over. »
