Fabio Leimer will do a F1 test with Pirelli and Lotus
As part of its involvement in GP2, Pirelli offers the reigning champion the opportunity to conduct a test in F1. This will soon be the case for Fabio Leimer, who will take the wheel of a 2012 Lotus.
Today, Fabio Leimer is no longer present in the paddocks of single-seater categories as he has turned to endurance racing, where he will make his debut at Le Mans with the Rebellion Racing team.
When we met Bruno Michel, the director of GP2, in the Barcelona paddock, he estimated that the Swiss driver was unable to make it to F1 due to a lack of political connections with the various teams: « I think that if Fabio Leimer did not go to F1 even though he had a budget, there is also a political aspect, personal connections that also make a difference. »
The test he will carry out at Paul Ricard on May 27th is likely to change that as he will get behind the wheel of the 2012 Lotus purchased by Pirelli. This 300-kilometer run will be conducted under the watchful eyes of Pastor Maldonado and Nicolas Prost, as well as Federico Gastaldi, the new deputy director of the Enstone team.
Pirelli continues to contribute to helping young drivers get acquainted with F1, as explained by Mario Isola, Pirelli’s head of competition: “We are delighted that Fabio has the chance to drive a Formula One car for winning the GP2, which shows our commitment to doing everything we can to help our GP2 drivers reach the top. He will be able to cover 300 kilometers on the 3.8-kilometer track. It will thus be a memorable experience for everyone present.”
The Swiss driver will have a busy schedule as he will be tasked with evaluating different types of tires: « Fabio will be able to use our demonstration tires, with different types of rubber and with different fuel loads. It will be interesting to get his feedback on the differences compared to the GP2 tires he used to win the title. »
This will not be his first experience since the Swiss team Sauber had called him during the young drivers’ tests that took place in 2011 at the Abu Dhabi circuit.
