Saturday: Caterham drivers at the back of the grid
The Caterham team is not faring well in Montreal, unable to compete with Marussia. Marcus Ericsson ended his qualifying session in the wall, while Kamui Kobayashi received a penalty due to a gearbox change. Both men are at the back of the grid in Montreal.
Kamui Kobayashi (No. 10) – 21st and 20th [22nd after penalty]
The Japanese driver will start from the back of the grid but remains optimistic and will give it his all during the race: During the qualifying session, we did two runs on super-softs, but the red flag at the end of the session didn’t allow me to improve my time. We made some progress compared to FP3 and the balance was better, so in my flying lap, I gained a tenth in the first two corners, but I had to abandon that run and finished 20th. With the grid penalty we have for changing the gearbox, I will start from the back of the grid and all I can do is fight.
Marcus Ericsson (n°9) – 20th and 21st [20th on the grid]
The Swede ended his qualifying session after making contact with the wall—causing a red flag—but he is happy with his car: « We went out early in Q1 for the first of two stints on super-soft tires, I was still having trouble getting the tires up to temperature, but the performance had improved compared to the morning so I could push more. Unfortunately, on my last flying lap, I lost the rear of the car at turn 9 while following other cars and hit the wall, ending my qualifying. »
He hopes to make up for it in the race even though it will be complicated: « It goes without saying that it has been a difficult weekend for me and the team. We are not strong enough here and that will make the race complicated, but I am ready to give my best, like everyone in the team. »
