Sunday: Grosjean and Maldonado did not make it to the finish for Lotus
No surprises within the Lotus team, which expected a tough weekend in Montreal. Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado both retired on Sunday despite a surprising pace and a daring strategy.
Romain Grosjean (No. 8) – DNF:
Despite his retirement, the Frenchman is pleased with the first victory of a Renault engine this season: « Today, it wasn’t great in terms of pace for me, but there were some positives before our retirement. We can see that a Renault F1 team can win a race, especially since the victory came on a circuit that is not considered one of the best for them. Congratulations to Daniel for his victory, which I watched in the garage. »
From a more personal perspective, his race ended with an unprecedented problem: « The rear wing of my car fell off, and it was safer to retire than to risk a potentially dangerous situation. We have a lot of work to do, so it’s time to go home and try to understand our problems and come back stronger in the next races. »
Pastor Maldonado (no.13) – Retirement:
Unlucky, the Venezuelan suffered a new retirement due to a problem with his power unit: « We had a similar problem to yesterday where we lost a lot of power. It’s a shame because the race was going very well, and we had an excellent pace. To be honest, I was quite surprised by the car and the strategy because we were trying to make only one stop while all the other cars had planned for two stops. »
As with his teammate, the two weeks before the next Grand Prix will be studious: « We just need to look exactly at what happened and work hard to solve the problems we have. We have shown that we can be competitive. »
