Official: Canada 10 More Years on the F1 Calendar
On the occasion of the 2014 Canadian Grand Prix, the mayor of Montreal took the opportunity to announce that an agreement had been reached between the race promoters and Bernie Ecclestone to keep the Montreal race on the F1 calendar for ten more years.
The Canadian Grand Prix will be on the Formula 1 World Championship calendar for ten more years, following the agreement reached with Bernie Ecclestone, the head of FOM, which holds the commercial rights to F1. This new contract also includes a renovation of the Gilles Villeneuve circuit, particularly concerning the paddock.
« If we were able to announce this agreement, it’s because we have the full support of the people. As for Ecclestone and ourselves, everything is fine. Because it’s taxpayers’ money going through the political process, but for us it’s a formality, » Denis Coderre, the mayor of Montreal, told reporters on Saturday.
The renovations estimated at approximately 30 million dollars will be paid by the city of Montreal, the Canadian government, and the state of Quebec will also contribute to this new 10-year contract.
The Canadian Grand Prix has been on the F1 calendar since 1978 – with an absence in 2009 – and has become one of the most spectacular and popular races of the season over the years and will therefore continue to host F1 at least until 2024.
