Taffin: A new power unit in 2015 for Renault
The 2014 season did not start very well for Renault, but the French manufacturer learned from its mistakes and bounced back, notably winning its first race with Red Bull and Ricciardo this weekend in Canada. However, the diamond brand intends to do even better next year by designing a revised power unit that incorporates the best of the current engines.
Rémi Taffin, director of track activities at Renault Sport F1, announced ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix that
“the Renault power units would finally be at full power for the first time this season.”
However, this is not yet enough to compete with Mercedes, as Christian Horner, director of the Red Bull Racing team, stated, cited by the Salzburger Nachrichten: “We still have a deficit of about 60 horsepower compared to the teams powered by a Mercedes engine.”
At the wheel of his Red Bull equipped with a Renault Turbo V6, Daniel Ricciardo managed to secure his first F1 victory in Montreal, which Rémi Taffin celebrated in the statement released by the brand with the diamond: « Congratulations to the entire Red Bull team and to Daniel for his first victory – let’s hope this is the beginning of a long series! We are delighted and proud to have contributed to this result. We have worked tirelessly to overcome our reliability issues, collaborating closely with the team both on and off the track to extract the most performance possible from our power unit. We have now proven that a Renault-powered car can cross the finish line in first position. We will do everything to continue improving our competitiveness and give our drivers the opportunity to be at the forefront from the start to the end of the race. »
« If we look at where we were at the beginning of the year, we have come a long way in a very short time. Even if our opponents faced problems today, we were able to deliver and achieve this excellent result to offer Renault Energy its first victory. It will undoubtedly be an additional source of motivation for the entire team at Viry-Châtillon, » added Taffin.
Even before this victory, RSF1 was hard at work to improve its power unit for this year and also for next year, as Rémi Taffin shared in Montreal, quoted by the magazine *Kleine Zeitung*: “We will analyze what our rivals have done and what works for them. Next year, we will have a new power unit.”
