On the Mercedes side, brakes remain an issue!
The Mercedes AMG F1 team experienced cooling issues with the brakes in Austria, reminiscent of the Canadian Grand Prix; the end of the race could have turned out differently for Lewis Hamilton and his teammate Nico Rosberg.
Toto Wolff indicated to the British site Autosport that the race was complicated for the W05 Hybrid in Styria. Indeed, an issue with the brake cooling emerged.
The drivers of the star-branded team did an amazing job by finishing on the top two steps of the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring. The difficulties in cooling the ERS reappeared this weekend, and both drivers had to find compromises to finish the race without incident.
Lewis Hamilton was warned several times about the abnormally high temperature of his brakes, while Nico Rosberg was forced to move away from Sergio Perez’s car to increase his own cooling.
Toto Wolff is surprised by the scale of the problem: « We encountered difficulties we did not expect. We struggled to keep the brakes at a normal temperature, on the circuit, the straights were not long enough to cool them down. The track temperature was hotter, and it really came as a surprise. »
Surprised by the competition, Toto Wolff congratulates the Williams F1 team for their performance in Austria: Williams was really performing today and I don’t think they encountered the same problems as us.
The Austrian is proud of the work accomplished by the team present on the circuit. As problems mounted, the engineers were able to find the solution and bring both cars to the finish: « The last two-thirds of the race were less stressful, we were able to find space with Valtteri Bottas and thus maintain the crucial parameters of the car within their operating window. »
Toto Wolff comments on the difference in settings between the two drivers: « We have always maintained equal arrangements for our drivers, but after Montreal we had to ensure that the parameters on the car were consistent for its proper functioning. »
