Saturday: McLaren benefits from the rain with Button 3rd and Magnussen 5th
By capitalizing on a perfect strategy, the Woking team places its two drivers in the top 5 on the grid of the British Grand Prix in F1. However, they believe their race pace is a bit weak to defend their positions.
Jenson Button (n°22) – 8th and 3rd
The Englishman, who may be in his last season in Formula 1, is the author of a very fine third place in qualifying. He is pleased with McLaren’s responsiveness in difficult conditions. He recounts the end of his session: « In my last lap in Q3, I thought it was over in the first sector: I made a mistake coming out of turn 5 with a big oversteer as I came onto the straight, but I still managed to make up the lost time in the rest of the lap. »
He expresses his preference for tomorrow: « I would love to have changing conditions for the race […] If it’s dry, we will not be as competitive as we were today. We will do our best to be as close as possible to the front, obviously, but we will have to run a perfect race to get a decent result. »
Kevin Magnussen (No. 20) – 7th and 5th
The young Dane regrets not having attacked more. He states: « I was quite surprised by the fact that the track was dry at the end of Q3. I didn’t even think we needed to go back out at the end because it wasn’t really dry enough – the conditions were drier than we thought. »
He thinks it will be difficult in the race: « We are in a good position to start the race, but, objectively, we are not where we should be. »
