Button thinks Lewis Hamilton can be crowned in 2014
Jenson Button believes that Lewis Hamilton is the most likely to win the world championship title this year, but that Nico Rosberg is smarter in race situations.
After five victories for Lewis Hamilton against only three for Nico Rosberg, Jenson Button believes that his former teammate, Lewis Hamilton, is unbeatable when he is clear-minded and focused. At the British Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton closed to within four points of Nico Rosberg and maintains the pressure for the world drivers’ championship title.
During an interview with Weekend Sports Breakfast, Jenson Button stated that Lewis Hamilton was the fastest but, while many thought Nico Rosberg was the smartest in race situations, he was not so sure. He: « I know how fast Lewis is and if he has a clear mind, he will be unbeatable [in the title race]. »
Jenson Button is frustrated with his own season, just like in 2013 when McLaren struggled all season to stay mid-field. The world champion driver remains confident and knows that his team will work hard to maintain the competitiveness of the MP4-29: « It’s a tough year to be honest, very tough. We are not where we are used to being, at the front. McLaren is used to fighting at the forefront with other leading teams. But this year, that has not been the case. But we are getting stronger, and this was evident at the British Grand Prix. We qualified in 3rd position in difficult conditions and almost secured a podium – but that wasn’t the case. It was an incredible weekend and the support from the fans was important. It was a very very special race. »
After securing fourth place at the British Grand Prix and the second-best race result of the season for the driver originally from Frome, Somerset, the Englishman believes that no excuses are allowed.
« We have the best engine on the grid, which is the Mercedes, so we have no excuse. We simply haven’t built a good enough car to win races this year, » he continued. « However, we are working hard, and there have already been many improvements introduced this year. »
Jenson Button believes in the team’s potential and that victories are not as far away as they seem: « We are going to win races. It’s just a matter of time. It’s very frustrating [not being able to compete for the win] because when you’ve already won races and a championship, nothing is good enough, but we are on the right track, and that’s the most important thing. »
