Reactions after Verstappen’s appointment at Toro Rosso

Max Verstappen, who will reach F1 at the record age of 17, spoke on the official Toro Rosso website. « Since the age of 7, Formula 1 has been the goal of my career, so this opportunity is a dream come true. I will give my best to succeed in the pinnacle of motorsport. With the return of the Verstappen name in Formula 1, I hope we can rekindle old memories and I hope to see many fans at all the Grand Prix. »

The young man is indeed the son of Jos Verstappen, who raced in F1 in the 1990s and early 2000s for Benetton, Tyrrell, Minardi, and Arrows.

Franz Tost, director of Toro Rosso, welcomed the arrival of the teenager, who is competing in the European Formula 3 Championship this year, to his team and declares: “We consider Max to be one of the most qualified young drivers of the new generation, and we believe he has the maturity and mental strength necessary to successfully take on this challenge. This year, he has already demonstrated how well he can handle difficult conditions [he is currently second in the F3 championship, ed.]. Keeping in mind that the Scuderia Toro Rosso was created with the aim of bringing young talents from the Red Bull Junior Team into Formula 1 and educating them, it will be up to us to provide Max with a competitive car to give him the best possible start in his Formula 1 career.”

But the one who sees the doors of Toro Rosso closing is the Frenchman Jean-Eric Vergne who reacted on Twitter: « Toro Rosso is a good school. I have learned a lot. Now I am focused on a great end of the season. I am already working for 2015. I still have a lot to show in F1. »

Earlier this season, tipped to replace JEV in 2015, another “son of”, Carlos Sainz Jr sees his plans for entering F1 somewhat thwarted. But he does not wish to project beyond 2014 and prefers to focus on his current Formula Renault 3.5 season, which he is leading quite comfortably. He also tweeted his reaction: « Many people ask me which path I am going to take and I say the same as I did at the beginning of the year: hard work, perseverance, and the World Series by Renault title. »
