Mercedes and Brembo have found the cause of Lewis Hamilton’s brake problem in Germany
While Lewis Hamilton mentioned that he had iced his right front brake disc during the qualifying in Belgium, Mercedes and its supplier Brembo wanted to let it be known that they had identified the cause of the failure that the driver experienced during the qualifying in Germany.
Lewis Hamilton’s off-track excursion during Q1 in Hockenheim was impressive and led the team to use brakes from another brand, Carbon Industries, for their home race event.
The incident had thus brought the Italian brand to light in an unflattering manner since it implied that the quality of its products was in question, especially as Niki Lauda did not hesitate to openly criticize the brand: Brembo has promised to strengthen the material. That it happened again is not acceptable.
Just before the start of the Belgian Grand Prix, the two partners released a statement in which they announced they had identified the cause of this technical failure. To start afresh on better terms, they present a united front: « To begin with, both parties can confirm that the quality of the brake disc material was not a factor. »
Following laboratory tests and analysis of the defective disc, it turns out that the failure was caused by the interaction between the brake disc and its support installed on the British driver’s single-seater. Both partners have already implemented countermeasures regarding both the geometry of the disc and the brake support to prevent such an incident from occurring in the future.
They then concluded their joint communication with their mutual wish to continue a long and fruitful working relationship.
