Sunday: Disappointment at McLaren F1 despite aggressive Button and Magnussen
Jenson Button delivered a fierce race during the Italian Grand Prix, notably against Sergio Pérez, but he finished only eighth. Kevin Magnussen, once again penalized for maneuvers that the stewards deemed illegal, scores just one point.
Jenson Button (No. 22) – 8th
Despite a result below his expectations, the British veteran had fun: « When you start fifth and sixth, you hope for a little more than just finishing in the points. If we had had a clear track, I think we could have done a little bit better – but, in traffic, it was easier for the cars around us to tease rather than the opposite. »
The highlight of his race was his magnificent battle against Sergio Pérez: « My incredible battle with Checo – we took the first Lesmo side by side, which doesn’t happen very often. It’s a shame I couldn’t overtake him – I tried so many times, but he was so strong on the brakes that to match him in the corner I was locking up the front and rear wheels, making corner exits difficult. But I was really on the edge. It was a superb wheel-to-wheel fight – I hope it was great entertainment for the spectators and fantastic TV for the fans at home. »
Kevin Magnussen (No. 20) – 10th (after 5-second penalty)
After a thunderous start, he was second at the first chicane, the young Dane had to fall back for a disappointing race in the end: « It’s unfortunate to leave this weekend with only one point. Okay, we’re not fighting for the world championship, but we’re fighting for crucial positions in the constructors’ championship, and the points we lost would have been very useful in this regard. Of course, it’s frustrating to receive another penalty, but we will analyze them and see what we can learn from it. Let’s see if we can do things differently next time. »
