IWC extends with Mercedes until 2018
After a year and a half of partnership, IWC has already decided to renew its agreement with Mercedes: the watch brand is now linked with the team until the end of the 2018 season.
The brand arrived in F1 at the beginning of last season as an official engineering partner. However, the relationship between the two companies is much older than that. Indeed, the Stuttgart manufacturer’s performance division, AMG, has been associated with the luxury group Richemont’s subsidiary since 2004.
Luxury watch brands are very common in F1 since almost all teams have a partner from this sector. However, it has chosen an original display. In fact, it had the idea to position a drawing of one of its watches on the drivers’ gloves at wrist level, allowing for maximum visibility during onboard camera shots.
The two partners have already completed half of their three-year agreement but have decided to extend it for the same duration, as commented by Toto Wolff, Mercedes’ Director of Competition: “We are thrilled to extend our partnership with IWC Schaffhausen for three additional seasons and have the opportunity to continue working with such a prestigious brand. Our shared passion for pushing the boundaries of engineering through technical innovation and design aligns perfectly with IWC, Mercedes AMG Petronas, and our sport, F1.”
To bring a commercial aspect to their collaboration, the two partners have decided to offer two limited series of 250 copies each, designed by the two team drivers, Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton.
