Sunday: Magnussen suffered from the heat of Singapore in his McLaren F1
McLaren hoped to score big points at the Singapore Grand Prix, but had to settle for the single point brought in by Kevin Magnussen. As for Jenson Button, he was forced to retire due to his power unit, even though a 6th place finish was within reach.
Kevin Magnussen (#20) – 10th
The young Dane experienced a very complicated race, mainly due to the heat and humidity in Singapore. The few laps spent behind the safety car did nothing to improve his situation: « It was a very, very tough race. During the race, I don’t know what happened but my seat started to get very hot, which made things extremely uncomfortable for me. »
He believes that without this issue, he could have done much better than 10th while starting 8th on the grid: « It was the hardest point I’ve ever earned. »
Jenson Button (No. 22) – Retirement (power unit)
The disappointment of Jenson Button was palpable after his retirement eight laps from the finish as he was about to go on the offensive against Valtteri Bottas: « I had been careful with my tires throughout the stint and I knew the last five laps would be tricky for Valtteri ahead of me. So I had changed the car’s settings and the chase was starting to get exciting. But, a few corners later, the car completely shut down at the hairpin. After the bridge, it stopped, and I had to pull over. » So, bad luck struck again for the 2009 world champion.
